  1. Atomic Museum in Las Vegas. Pike’s Peak in Colorado. There are so many fabulous places to explore. Are you going to update your list after you get comments? I’d love to see what others have to say. Drive the Apache Trail in AZ. Have fun.

  2. Not sure why my comments won’t post when I put in a link to my blog. Anyhow the ringing rocks in Montana (July 2010 on my blog). They are also in Pennsylvania and we’ve been there. The only other place is in Australia.

  3. short list of things I would add off the top of my head that we have visited and really enjoyed – tons of photos in various trips on my blog at MA – Boston history and Cape Cod National Seashore
WI – check out Door County lighthouses
    VT – cheese farms
TX – Palo Duro canyon hiking and the show at the amphitheater; visit the Hill Country in April to see the gorgeous fields of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush
ND – Theodore Roosevelt National Park
NY – hike in the Finger Lakes region especially the gorges (and visit tons of little local wineries) – also go up to the Watertown area and check out the 1000 islands
NM – hike in Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument
MT – drive the gorgeous Beartooth Highway road (Charles Kuralt called it the most beautiful road in the US) – also check out VA City and Nevada City (not cities at all – cool little western, almost ghost, towns)
MN – walk at the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Itaska State Park – also go to the northern tip of MN to Grand Portage and see how the voyageurs met up at Grand Portage National Park – also canoe in the Boundary Waters area
MS – check out historic Natchez
KY – Mammoth Caves National Park
Hawaii – on the big Island go to Volcanoes National Park
AL – visit the Bon secour National Wildlife Refuge when the pitcher plant bogs are in bloom

  4. I did not see the London Bridge on your Lake Havasu list. While in VA at Williamsburg, do not miss Jamestown and Yorktown. GA has sooo much to see. Atlanta could take weeks. Augusta is great and Corp of Engineers is quite affordable.

  5. Oh my, you had to ask…
Crater Lake National Park, Oregon – drive the rim AND take the guided boat ride around the lake.
Drive from Crater Lake to Glide, Oregon via Hwy 138 and hike to the waterfalls along the way.
Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway in Oregon (many waterfalls along scenic hwy…do not take RV on scenic hwy).
Silver Falls State Park outside Silverton, Oregon (hike to 11 waterfalls)
On Oahu, Hawaii: hike to the top of Diamond Head for spectacular views of Waikiki, Cultural Center in Laie, snorkel at Hanauma Bay, walk the lagoons at Ko’Olina in Kapolei, watch North Shore surfing in winter, visit the Pali Lookout, go to Byodo-In Temple ( and Kaneohe’s Ho’omaluhia botanic gardens (
Chattanooga, TN: see my two blogs – and

You know what, I could go on and on. Sometime we should compare notes. I have a Word document Bucket List (13 pages long in outline form) of all the places yet to see. As we complete them, I cross them off my list with the date we went there. I will be adding a lot of your suggestions to my list. I figure I’ll live forever because I’ll always have something to look forward to!!

  6. WOW, This is a lot of stuff posted , or places to go , with lots of hobbies.. Anyhow Hello from Chattanooga.. Did some Full -time back in 2000 ., now seasonal.. We lived 12 years on east Florida close to Merritt Island.. Heard the Indian river is not very nice any more with pollution.? Just did the west coast & quite a few hobbies can be done around Crystal River & Homassassa Springs river.. Should go back next year. !

  7. You may already know about it, but a website called has a lot of off the beaten path sites to visit.

Come on over to KY. I think everyone should watch a horse race at least once. While you’re here check out Keeneland in Lexington. I’ve never been but I hear its prettier than Churchill Downs.

  8. Go digging in the diamond mine in Arkansas. (Only scrolled down as far as that state in your post and wanted to comment before I forgot.) It is near the Hot Springs National Park which is wonderfully interesting and different (take a bath there… seriously) — I assume you have all the National Parks on your wish list anyway. I’ll come back and scroll some more later. We’ve slept (in our RV) in all the states but Alaska and Michigan. Planning an Alaska trip this summer.

    Happy travels!!!

  9. Great list! I’m stealing some of these ideas, OK?!? While in Southern Utah, we like to hike and/or bike ride around Snow Canyon (by St. George…not too far from Zion National Park) and there’s an awesome natural amphitheater right at the base of a canyon where they have great shows. It’s called Tuacahn Center for the Arts. Thanks for all the fun ideas! My bucket list just expanded :o)

  10. Wow – I’m tired just reading your list! Sounds like you guys are up for a really big adventure. We’re a little more of “home-bodies”, as we’ve spend the last couple years in Oregon, our home state. We volunteer for Oregon State Parks. However, next winter we will experience volunteering at an Arizona State Park, just south of Lake Havasu, so we’ll be close to one of your goals. We’re not so for from Umpqua Lighthouse on the Oregon coast right now either! Hope you come check out Oregon – you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy the journey!

  11. This is quite an impressive list! Be sure to leave time to stop at unexpected places along the way. You’ll many interesting things to see an do as you travel.

You left off Tybee Island in your Georgia list! Climb the tallest lighthouse in Georgia, stroll on the beach, and eat seafood in one of the many restaurants on the island.
