The Monarch Butterfly Grove

Photo Challenge Extraordinary

At this time there are only a few clusters of Monarchs but in a few weeks there should be more

The monarchs love the weather and the eucalyptus trees in the grove. These monarch butterflies are extraordinary they live 6 months instead of the usual 6 weeks.

Guadalupe-Nimopo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge near Pismo Beach, CA

The Guadalupe-Nimopo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge has a nice walk to the beach at Oso Flaco Lake. The visitor center is in the Dunes Center in Guadalupe, California. My brother-in-law’s sister Bonnie lives near the national wildlife refuge she told us that Oso Flaco Lake is a great walk to the dunes. Bonnie and her dog use to explored the USA in a van. Also, Bonnie wrote a western book called Blessings, Bullets and Bad Men.

Kevin and I went into the Dunes Center to get information on birding in the area. The volunteer was well informed about the dunes and where the good birding is at the refuge.

It cost a $10.00 donation at the dunes center and a $5.00 parking fee at Oso Flaco Lake but we added 5 birds to our bird life list here. It was a great walk and a good feeling identifying 5 new birds. The most expensive walk we have taken this trip. lol

  1. So jealous! I just suggested we swing over that way after our trip down 395, but it got voted down! I guess it is a little far to see butterflies and visit the olive groves and then head back toward AZ. I hope you are there long enough for the arrival of the masses:)
